On 16 October 2024 Natalia Voutova, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia and the Ambassador of France to Georgia, H.E. Sheraz Gasri visited the Pankisi Valley to discuss support to CSOs, education, women’s rights, and civic engagement with the local communities. Their tour began at the Roddy Scott Foundation Learning Center in Duisi, where discussions revolved around the Centre's role in educating local youth and the contributions of community organisations in the development of this region.
The delegation also met with representatives from the Kakheti Regional Development Foundation (KRDF) and the Youth Organization Illuminator to discuss civil society initiatives and their positive impact on the Pankisi Valley. A notable part of the visit was the exchange with the Pankisi Women’s Council, where the conversation centred on women’s rights and their role in the community.
A highlight of the day was an engagement with local youth at the Duisi Education Centre, organised by UNICEF. The Ambassador and the Head of Office had a discussion with young people on how they envisione their role in the future of Georgia. The ongoing Franco-Georgian cooperation on children’s rights was also highlighted in the discussions.
The visitors explored Pankisi's rich cultural and historical heritage which included a visit to a local mosque.
This visit reaffirms the Council of Europe’s commitment to fostering human rights, inclusive development and supporting local non-governmental organisations.
