Round table on alternatives to detention of migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees
On 5 July 2018, in Sofia, Bulgaria, the UNHCR and the Council of Europe are jointly organising a roundtable on detention and alternatives to detention of migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees, with focus on the particular situation of children. The main objective of the roundtable “Critical issues in the domestic context: Challenges and solutions”, is to share knowledge and expertise in order to guarantee the protection of children on the move and to enhance coordination between crucial national and international partners working in this field. The roundtable will bring together judges and other key stakeholders, such as lawyers, civil servants of the State Agency for Child Protection and the State Agency for Refugees (SAR) as well as NGOs active in the area of child protection and migration. Council of Europe standards regarding the administrative detention of migrants and alternatives with a special focus on children and families will be presented as well as selected European Court of Human Right case-law pertaining to children and families in immigration detention, their best interest and the obligation to seek alternatives. On the side of the Council of Europe, the roundtable is organised as part of the Council of Europe Action Plan on protecting refugee and migrant children (2017-2019).
