Training on responding to hatred based on sexual orientation and gender identity grounds continue for the Montenegro Police

As a part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe action on “Promotion of diversity and equality in Montenegro”, in co-operation with the Ministry of Interior of Montenegro and local civil society organisations, trainings for police officers on the topic "Fight against hate crimes and the rights of LGBTI people" continue, with a focus on the security centres from the Central region of Montenegro.

The training, with a leading expert from civil society and one of the trained police officers certified by the Ministry, gathered in the capital police officers from Podgorica, Danilovgrad, Kolašin, Cetinje, Nikšić, Šavnik and Plužine. The programme covered all the specifics of threats to rights of LGBTI people, the most common situations in which these rights are violated, and the basic responses and approaches of the police in dealing with victims of homophobic violence and discrimination.

The trained police officers underwent themselves a learning programme in the past months, based on the Council of Europe relevant manual, as well as the local one prepared by NGO Juventas and updated with support of the action.

The cascade training programme will continue in the coming period in the South of Montenegro.

The cascade trainings for local police officers are an initiative of the action “Promotion of diversity and equality in Montenegro”, part of the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”.
