Training for judges on balancing between the freedom of expression and the right to privacy

Within the scope of the Joint Project “Reinforcing Judicial Expertise on Freedom of Expression and the Media in South-East Europe (JUFREX)” co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe, a two day training for judges was organised on 28-29 November 2017 in Hotel Manastir, Berovo. The activity was organised in partnership with the Macedonian Academy for judges and public prosecutors “Pavel Satev” under the topic-title “Balancing between the freedom of expression and the right to privacy”.

The activity focused on balancing between Article 10 and Article 8 of the ECHR which often compete against one another, seen through the case law of the European Court of Human Rights. An overview of the national case law, giving a comparative angle on the topic, was presented as well.

The training gathered 20 participants, judges of Basic and Appellate courts from around the country. Several  judicial assistants attended the training as well. The aim of the training was to strengthen participants’ knowledge on the matter and help them improve necessary expertise and skills for adjudication of cases of this nature in line with Council of Europe’s standards.

The training was led by an international consultant, Dr Mirjana Lazarova Trajkovska and a national consultant, Ms Lidija Dimchevska – a judge in the Appellate court in Skopje.
