Media Freedom in Sport

Patrick Penninckx, Head of the Information Society Department of the Council of Europe, made a presentation on “Media freedom in sport” at the Forum on Sport and Human Rights organised on June 1, 2021. The speaker provided an overview on the relation between sport, society and freedom of expression and outlined obstacles to the exercise of the right to inform in and around sport professionals and events. He further reviewed the gender issues in sport from the media prospective as well as the impact of the automatic content creation on sport journalism. The presenter also exemplified latest alerts involving sports’ arena from the Platform to protect journalism and the safety of journalists as well as the relevant ECHR cases concerning freedom of expression in sports.

The Forum was organised by the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) to stimulate an exchange between the human rights monitoring bodies and the world of sport, creating awareness and determining further possibilities of cooperation.
