The EDQM is a leading organisation that protects public health by enabling the development, supporting the implementation and monitoring the application of quality standards for safe medicines and their safe use. It develops also guidance and standards in the areas of blood transfusion, organ transplantation and consumer health issues.
OMCL Network: Control of Medicines
The European Pharmacopoeia is a collection of quality standards applicable to all medicines. Tests to be carried out on medicines and raw materials used in the production of medicines are described in details. These quality standards are legally binding and compliance is mandatory in order to obtain a marketing authorisation from a national or European authority.
Patient and consumer protection
The EDQM, Council of Europe is collaborating with national, European and international organisations in efforts to combat counterfeiting/falsification of medical products and similar crimes; and provides policies and model approaches for the safe use of medicines in Europe, including guidelines on pharmaceutical care and a database MELCLASS which contains national information about the classification status and supply conditions of medicines. The EDQM is also engaged in efforts to strengthen consumer health protection in Europe, with a focus on the safe use and quality of cosmetics and materials designed for packaging or other purposes involving contact with foodstuffs or medicines.
Transfusion and transplantation
In the field of Blood Transfusion the EDQM, Council of Europe concentrates on studying the ethical, legal and organisational aspects of blood transfusion with a view to ensuring quality, increasing availability, avoiding wastage, ensuring optimal use of blood supplies and analysing the possible ethical and organisational impact of new scientific developments.
The work of the EDQM in the area of organ, tissue and cell transplantation contributes actively to the implementation of high standards for the protection of public health and for the promotion of human rights and dignity.
