On 18th of February 2021, the Council of Europe project “Promoting European standards in the audiovisual regulation of the Republic of Moldova” organised its Steering Committee meeting aimed at discussing key results achieved so far and the activities envisaged in the following timeframe.
Giulia Re, Deputy Head of the Councill of Europe office in Chisinau underlined that “freedom of expression media and the audiovisual domain have been and remain a key priority for the Council of Europe, a priority that has been re-included as a commitment to be further reinforced in a new Council of Europe Action Plan for 2021-2024. We will continue reinforcing an environment for freedom of expression and advancing complaints of national practices with international standards in the field of media and internet governance.”
In his welcoming speech, Shahin Abbasov, Program Manager, highlighted that this Steering Committee meeting aims to discuss the progress of the project has achieved so far and the activities that are planning to be undertaken during the remaining time. “Despite COVID-19 pandemic challenges faced during the implementation period, we have managed to switch of our working modalities and achieve good results.”
During the event, the Project staff highlighted a series of accomplishments achieved throughout the implementation phase until February 2021, which include the development of the Newsroom Convergence Strategy and Action Plan for Teleradio-Moldova, two documentaries on social and human rights issues, and the analysis of a series of normative acts adopted by the Audiovisual Council, following the implementation of the new Audiovisual Media Service Code in 2019.
The Steering Committee meeting, held online, brought together representatives of the Projects’ beneficiaries, representatives of the Audiovisual Council, Moldovan National Public Broadcaster “Teleradio-Moldova”, Ombudsperson of Teleradio-Moldova, Telefilm Chisinau and representatives of the Council of Europe. The meeting was marked by a fruitful discussion on good practices and the main results achieved so far, as well as by an exchange of experiences and views on main priorities that will form the basis of further cooperation with the stakeholders.
The Project “Promoting European standards in the audio-visual regulation of the Republic of Moldova”, implemented throughout March 2020-April 2021, aims towards strengthening the media and regulatory framework related to media through the implementation of European standards and in enhancing the professionalism of public service broadcasters. The activities envisaged under the project were structured around two components, focusing on:
I) the improvement and proper implementation of the regulatory framework related to media pluralism;
II) enhancing professionalism of public service broadcasters.
