Short description of the project:

Social media is full of a large amount of information that we learn on a daily basis. However, we do not know whether the information presented in the media is true and we often share false information that ultimately affects us. False information is often attracting greater interest than recently verified information.

False information spreads quickly, some people don’t even know how to verify it which ultimately affects emotions and often ends unfortunately. Therefore, it’s extremely important to think before we share something in order to identify false information, and we need to verify it before sharing.

At school age, it’s important for students to analyse possible negative reactions triggered by the Media and analyse their own responsibility while sharing the media product.
 

Aims/objectives

  • Raise the awareness of the school community about media literacy;
  • Students are able to identify, analyse and process information in the social media correctly;
  • Students learn how to detect fake news techniques, develop analytical and critical thinking and practice a feeling of digital responsibility.
  • Students will develop critical analytical and critical thinking skills.
     

Expected results/outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and express the importance of information, receive and post information, assess and organise information; they will be aware of the ethical use of information and further communication for information processing;
  • Students will be able to think about the possible outcomes of sharing false information.
  • Students will learn how to identify the techniques of false information;
  • They will develop analytical, critical thinking and feeling of digital responsibility;
  • Students will understand the negative emotional reactions triggered by the media and will be able to analyse their responsibility while sharing the media product.
  • Students will develop linguistic, communicative and plurilingual skills.
  • Students will develop analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Students will develop co-operation skills.
     

Changes

Inform the school community about the project;
English and Civic Education Teachers will introduce the project to the school community

Trainings: for the school community (students, parents, teachers). What is media literacy?
a) An English teacher will conduct a workshop for schoolteachers on the topic of what is media literacy
b) The civic education teacher will conduct awareness-raising information meetings with school students and parents

Simulation games for 7-11 graders "is information false or true";
English teacher and civics teacher will conduct simulation games for students, whether the information is false or true.
During the simulation game, students are given information texts printed from the Internet and they have to identify which ones are fake and which ones are real.
We will use resources: 

Invite a competent guest to school and arrange discussion on the subject: how to identify false information;
We will invite a media expert to the school to conduct a seminar for students: How to detect false information.

Make posters with the title “think, verify and share”;

a) Civic Education Teacher carries out a Student Information Meeting on How to Use Online Platform Canva.com How to Make Posters
b) Students involved in civic education will create posters using canva.com

Create a blog with the participation of students – how to distinguish false and true information?
a) English and Civic Education Teacher will conduct an informational meeting for students on how to create a blog using gmail.com
B) Students will create a blog using gmail.com under the title: “Search, Check, Share"
 

Challenges you faced

Due to the Pandemic it might not be possible to organise face-to-face encounters, however online implementation of the project can still be considered.
