Indietro Mescla’t

Purpose:

Mescla’t is a festive day that brings together the organisations  that work in Sabadell for the culture of solidarity, active participation, and the promotion of living together. The activity has been consolidated as a space for showcasing the city's diversity, as well as a showcase for organisations and the different organisations (Gender, Feminism and LGBTI, New Citizenship, Beliefs and Convictions, Roma, Youth Organisations, Solidarity and Cooperation Council, Citizen Platform in support of migrants and refugees in Sabadell).

Stimulus/Rationale:

Mescla’t is an action implemented in the frame of the civil rights policies. It is currently included in the Sabadell Intercultural Plan (2021-2025) under the priority ‘Strengthening ties’ – Encouraging intercultural participation: To consolidate and increase participation in the Mescla’t initiative as a space for the meeting place for entities and boards of entities in the city that work with the common objective of advancing in the recognition of diversity and positive interaction.

Mescla’t gives voice, space and visibility in the public space to cultural expressions of diverse origin. It’s an initiative for intercultural recognition and dialogue and for the promotion of interaction.

Process:

The programme of that day includes different activities in the public space: concerts, rap and hip-hop exhibits, workshops, photo exhibitions, etc.

In 2023 it was the 10th edition of this activity, and it involved the participation of some organisations.

Organisation

The initiative is coordinated by the City Council, but it’s implemented with the organisations which are part of the different commissions of the Civil Rights Department:

  • Gender, feminism and LGBTI
  • New citizenship
  • Religious diversity
  • Roma people
  • Youth
  • Solidarity and cooperation
  • Refugees

From April to October, some of the organisations meet up in the Mescla’t organisation commission to work on the programme / agenda. In November, the commission meets again to evaluate the action and propose improvements for the next edition.

Dissemination

The action is disseminated in various ways: city’s website, press announcements and releases, posters all over the streets, etc. It’s also disseminated through the organisations channels.

Impact:

Mescla’t has demonstrated to be useful for the organisations to meet in a common space and to know better each other. In some cases, they have started collaborations that bring up different areas together and tackle intersectionality. It is the case of projects addressing gender and human rights approaches or LGBT and development cooperation.
