Visit to the Council of Europe of the Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Moldova

The Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Moldova (CEC) visited the Council of Europe on 21 and 22 January 2020, in order to discuss on-going and future co-operation. In addition, the CEC delegation held an exchange of views on the electoral reform in the Republic of Moldova with representatives from the Secretariat of the Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) and from the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), the Secretariat of the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO), the Media and Internet Governance Division as well as the Gender Equality Division. An overview of the functioning and activities of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) was also presented to them. New areas of cooperation were discussed including training for judiciary professionals on the ECtHR related to elections, as well as on the organisation of local and regional elections.

Dorin Cimil, Chair of the CEC and Ivan Comur, Chair of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia of the CEC, met with Snežana Samardžić-Marković, Director General of Democracy to discuss the electoral reforms in the Republic of Moldova, notably the approval of the Strategic Plan of the CEC 2020-2023, developed on the basis of the Council of Europe URSO methodology (Toolkit for strategic planning and prioritisation of electoral cooperation) in order to prioritise future action to support the reforms and the implementation of the Strategic Plan. Both Chairs also met Ms Verena Taylor, Director of the Office of the Directorate General of Programmes, to discuss prospectives of electoral co-operation as part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova.
