Back Jean-Claude Juncker: "The Council of Europe, a major partner of the EU"

Jean-Claude Juncker:

“The Council of Europe and the European Union are partners built on the same foundations and the same ideals”, said Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, in his address today to the Assembly. “In times of uncertainty I think we need to use common resources to provide guidance to our societies,” he stressed, adding that the Council of Europe was a “major partner”, particularly in the fight against terrorism. “We are working together to ensure that democracy can truly take root everywhere.”

“The Commission has done everything possible to deliver a European response, providing humanitarian assistance, supporting the member states that have received the highest number of refugees, relocating asylum seekers across the Union in a spirit of solidarity,” added Mr Juncker, referring to the migration crisis and announcing that an agreement on a further 50 million euros in aid had been signed this morning to address the immediate needs of the Syrian refugees.

Mr Juncker also spoke of the EU’s commitment to accede to the European Convention on Human Rights. “This accession to the Convention is, under my presidency, a political priority for the Commission,” he said.
