The Council of Europe will publish its annual penal statistics for 2016, which include country-by-country data on prison populations in Europe (SPACE I) and alternatives to pre-trial detention and community sanctions and measures (SPACE II). Conducted for the Council of Europe by the University of Lausanne, the reports contain information from 47 prison administrations and the same number of probation agencies.

Professor Marcelo Aebi, director of the survey, will present this year’s statistics at media briefings in Strasbourg at 9.30 a.m. on 19 March (Palais de l’Europe, Room 7), and at the Council of Europe office in Brussels (Avenue des Nerviens 85, 2nd floor) at 10 a.m. on 20 March.
