Protect privacy and personal data and media – training of Tunisian journalists

On 2, 3 and 4 March 2023 in Tunis, about 90 Tunisian journalists and  professionals from various media – written press, radios, television –  attended 3 workshops on the respect for privacy and personal data in their daily practice.

Under the guidance of trainers who exposed the theory and legal frameworks, international as well as Tunisian, participants had the opportunity to improve their knowledge and to acquire the necessary tools to avoid damages to privacy and personal data in the course of their work. They discussed this topic, which is important for their work during case studies. The living debates testified not only of the interest but also of the importance given to such topic.

Besides the principles set forth by international standards and the requirements of the Tunisian legislation, the trainers detailed the notions of consent, of respect for the privacy of vulnerable persons, of minors but also of public figures, some aspects of the right to image, the media coverage of legal proceedings, etc… on the basis of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.

These workshops were organised with the collaboration of the Union of Tunisian journalists (SNJT) in the framework of the Council of Europe / European Union joint programme “Support to independent bodies in Tunisia – PAII-T”
