Ratification of Convention 108+ by Spain

Yesterday, on 28 January 2021, in the presence of the Deputy Secretary General, Ms Gabriella BATTAINI-DRAGONI, Ambassador Manuel MONTOBBIO, Permanent Representative of Spain to the Council of Europe deposited the instrument of ratification of the Amending Protocol to the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data (CETS 223).

Spain has been Party to Convention 108 since 1 October 1985; it became yesterday the 11th State to ratify the modernised Convention 108.

The entry into force of Convention 108+ is crucial in the digital age and therefore we hope that many other ratifications will follow this year to enable the rapid entry into force of this modernised landmark instrument.

This ratification is a nice anniversary present for Convention 108, as it happened 40 years after it was opened for signature on 28 January 1981.
