Croatia: Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe presented at the 4th Congress of Rural Tourism

On 9th May and at the invitation of Mr. Frano MATUSIC, Secretary of State for Tourism of Croatia, and Mrs. Dijana KATICA, President of the Organisation Committee in the framework of the Congress, Stefano DOMINIONI presented the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme to 300 Congress participants. Participants gathered in Supertar on the Island of Brac, Croatia, represented various cultural and tourism sectors, national universities and research institutes as well as local public authorities and tourism professionals. The title of the 4th Congress “A new era – the era of rural tourism” was chosen to symbolise the increasing interest cultural tourism, and the concept of cultural routes with a particular focus on rural, less represented areas, that are attracting both local and national interest. Among the speakers, Lidija PLIBERSEK, President of the European Cemeteries Route, Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, spoke on the topic of “Cemeteries as village tourism development site”.

Croatia currently features several certified Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, including: the Phoenicians' Route, The Routes of the Olive Tree, Iter Vitis, the European Cemeteries Route, European Route of Historical Thermal Towns, ATRIUM (Architecture of Totalitarian Regimes of the 20th Century), the Roman Emperors and Danube Wine Route, and Destination Napoleon. Croatia is a member of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe since 2016.
