Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe highlighted in the UNWTO/UNESCO 4th World Conference Declaration on Tourism and Culture

On 12-13 December, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) 4th  Conference on Culture and Tourism:  Investing in future generations took place in Kyoto, Japan.

The World Conference is a major event jointly organized by UNWTO and UNESCO bringing together Ministers, high-level representatives, public and private sector stakeholders and NGOs from across the world to discuss the key issues at the forefront of tourism and culture. The 2019 World Conference focused on cultural transmission, community and capacity building in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) and the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.

At the invitation of UNWTO/UNESCO, Mr Stefano DOMINIONI, Executive Secretary of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe (EPA) and Director of the European Institute of Cultural Routes presented the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe Programme in the context of a panel dedicated to strengthening capacities for sustainable development of cultural tourism. Koichiro MATSUURA, Former UNESCO Director-General, participated among the panellists.

The Conference conclusions laid down in the Kyoto Declaration on Tourism and Culture: Investing in future generations state the vital role played by the Cultural Routes in the framework of strengthening capacities geared towards the sustainable development of cultural tourism and better understanding of shared values.

Notably, the Kyoto Declaration affirms the key relevance of:

Investing in human capacities and the sustainable development of less visited areas, by providing training on cultural and thematic routes and contributing to intercultural dialogue, international cooperation and peace (art. 4.4).
