Secretary General attends Srebrenica Commemoration: Remembrance and reconciliation are hard, but essential

Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić has attended the Commemoration ceremony for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. In her speech, she stressed the importance of remembrance and reconciliation.

“We have gathered here today to pay tribute to the immense suffering of the victims, their families who have lost their loved ones and who are searching for those who are still missing”. “Their pain and suffering remain real and palpable. That is why we need and must remember Srebrenica. This is our pledge for the future”.

“Remembrance and reconciliation are hard. But they are essential. They are needed so that people can understand, heal and move forward, together, in the interests of every community. This ceremony is a statement of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s determination to do that.”

“Srebrenica is a scar that is still healing. And it will never fade completely. Instead, it reminds us of the horrors that human beings are willing to commit - but also of our commitment and determination that they must never happen again.”

“We must educate young people to be engaged, responsible citizens who take part in democratic life and advocate for the rights of every single citizen”, said the Secretary General.
