Training Course on AI Literacy with young people

The Training Course on AI Literacy with young people took place in the EYCB 28 March to 1 April 2022. The course brought together young multipliers to explore what AI Literacy is, to understand where AI exists in young people’s every-day life and to discuss what youth organisations need in order to contribute to increased AI Literacy of young Europeans. It built on conclusions reached by two previous seminars organised by the Youth Department on Artificial Intelligence in 2019 and 2020. The course focused on exploring AI from a human rights angle, by looking specifically at AI ethics and by understanding the Council of Europe approach to, and involvement with the topic.

AI literacy refers in this context to young people having access to information about Artificial Intelligence, and to the skills and competences needed to understand how algorithmic systems work and what their impact is on everyday life in society.

The participants of the course also had a chance to engage with the new youth campaign Democracy Here | Democracy Now. The connections between democracy and technological developments were explored both in the ways technology can impact democratic practices, and how the usage of technology can be made more inclusive and transparent.

The group finally explored how to act as multipliers for AI Literacy with young people. The educational tools used to explore AI during the course were discussed as concrete ways that can be used in communities when working with young people. Actions were planned both online and offline to reach different groups of young people.
