The Advisory Council on Youth has strongly condemned the violations of LGBTQI persons’ human rights in Turkey following the ban of the Istanbul LGBTI+ Pride March for the third year in a row.

Voicing their concerns together, the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer & Intersex Youth and Student Organisation (IGLYO), the European Youth Forum and the Advisory Council on Youth of the Council of Europe have issued a statement following the Istanbul authorities’ ban of the LGBTI+ Pride March thus preventing LGBTI persons from exercising their human rights. In addition, protestors were attacked by police when they tried to hold the parade. The ban and use of violence violate LGBTQI persons’ right of freedom of assembly, association and expression. Hate from some “segments of society” cannot be used as an excuse to curb the right to organise or participate in public gatherings. By banning Pride, the local government has discriminated against a vulnerable group and denied them their fundamental human rights.

“We believe it is the responsibility of the government, police and other authorities to safeguard the human rights of all persons and their right to exercise them” said the three organisations.
