Rediscovering Umbria’s silk tradition

The conference "European Silk Road", organized by the Association "Faro Trasimeno" in collaboration with the Italian seat of the Council of Europe, took place on 18 December at the Church of San Felice Papa in Castiglione del Lago. As a further step towards certification by the Council of Europe of this new cultural route, the gathering singled out Umbria among the regions interested in the project’s development, thus placing it in a broader historical and cultural context. Luciano Giacché, coordinator of the Faro Trasimeno heritage community, opened the conference, followed by the Director of the Italian Representation of the Council of Europe based in Venice, Luisella Pavan-Woolfe and Silvia Cappellozza, researcher at CREA-AA, who introduced the concept of sustainable sericulture in Italy, shedding light on environmental and socio-economic issues. The European Silk Route project aims at promoting new cultural paths enhancing the development of a participatory and sustainable cultural tourism. It is gradually including a growing number of Italian and European regions. Among those present were Matteo Burico, mayor of Castiglione del Lago, Professor Manuel Vaquero Piñeiro of Perugia University and Mariella Morbidelli of the Faro Trasimeno Association.
