Italy forges a green school programme

On 23 March, the Ministry of Education presented the "School ReGeneration" plan to bring about ecological and cultural transition in schools.

Schools will thus serve as a place to develop educational projects on the environment, sustainability, cultural heritage and global citizenship. The aim is to foster an awareness that development is sustainable if it responds to the needs of present generations and does not compromise future ones, learning how to live the world in a new way. "School ReGeneration" is built on four basic pillars: regeneration of knowledge; regeneration of infrastructure; regeneration of behaviours and regeneration of opportunities. It features, among others, the establishment of sustainable canteens serving 0 km products, 200 new full energy-efficient schools, the redesign of materials in green spaces and a major project to plant trees outside school buildings. In this way, students can receive an education to inhabit the world in a fresh way and learn how to care about environmental issues. Minister Patrizio Bianchi opened the meeting.

Luisella Pavan-Woolfe participated stating: “It is important that citizens possess a set of fundamental skills for an active participation in society and for influencing political decisions that affect their lives. These include critical understanding, empathy, flexibility and adaptability, tolerance of ambiguity and civic sense ". Pavan-Woolfe stressed how the programme goes beyond environmental education to embrace the concept of sustainability, teaching young people new knowledge and behaviors and offering them opportunities, for instance, through specific training courses at secondary school and university level.
