Holocaust Memorial Day opens in Venice

On the occasion of Holocaust Memorial Day 2022, the City of Venice presents and coordinates a calendar of more than sixty commemorative events. Among these, the Italian Representation of the Council of Europe organizes four different initiatives aimed at keeping alive the memory of the Holocaust and celebrating the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi extermination camp of Auschwitz. This series of events will open on 16 January, with the presentation of the book "Gli italiani ad Auschwitz (1943-1945). Deportazioni, lavoro forzato. Un mosaico di vittime" by Laura Fontana at the Aula Magna of the Ateneo Veneto. Among those present, there will be Marina Scarpa Campos, National Vice President of the "Associazione Figli della Shoah" and Michela Zanon, representing the Venice Jewish Museum and CoopCulture. On 17 January, at the Ateneo Veneto, will open the exhibition "Art in the Olocaust" by Yad Vashem, National Institution for the Memory of the Shoah in Jerusalem. The exhibition includes photo reproductions of drawings and paintings created by Jewish artists between 1939 and 1945. It will stay open until 28 January. Guided tours will be arranged.
On 19 January at the Mestre Cinema Dante there will be a screening of "Woman in gold", the film by Simon Curtis which portrays the story of the Klimt painting stolen by the Nazis.
This cycle of commemorative events will end with the presentation of the newly published book by hebraist Matteo Corradini on the life of Virginia Gattegno "Per chi splende questo lume". This will be held on 24 January at the Palazzo Grandi Stazioni in Venice. The book tells the story of the last living Venetian deportee.

Access to these four events is by reservation via e-mail ([email protected]).
