Albanian partners and beneficiaries appraised the progress in strengthening democratic citizenship education at school

The Steering Committee meeting of the "Strengthening democratic citizenship education in Albania" project took place in Tirana and gathered partners, beneficiaries, donors and key stakeholders including representatives from Sida, the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Agency for Quality Assurance in the Pre-University Education System (ASCAP), the People's Advocate, the Commissioner against Discrimination and the Students Parliament.

Jutta Gützkow, Head of the CoE Office in Tirana, in her address to the Steering Committee members, emphasised the unique character of this project and the valuable cooperation of all stakeholders, which has already led to important results and impacts.

Villano Qiriazi, Head of the Education Department of the Council of Europe, stressed that the project reflects the main pillars of the new strategy in the field of education and other work of the Inter-governmental Committee on Education (CD-EDU) and that it can even be cited as an example of best practice to the member states.

The representative of the Ministry of Education and Sports, Zamira Gjini, expressed her satisfaction with the project and stressed the importance of continuing with the next phase of the project. According to the beneficiary and stakeholders, the continuation of the project is crucial to the sustainability of the results achieved and to support the new priorities such as digitalisation, participatory school budgets democratic labs at schools and to strengthen the culture of democracy in Albania through education and implementation of the whole school model and RFCDC.

The Swedish experience on democratic citizenship education and its incorporation into the educational processes was presented by the Swedish experts with a view to streamlining the future project activities. The representatives of the Swedish Embassy in Tirana and Sida, financially supporting this project, also noted its relevance and flexibility and its ability to accommodate the beneficiary’s needs and to trigger changes, highlighting the importance of sustainability of results.

The project team had the opportunity to share with the participants some of the achieved results and presented an outline for the main activities. In the course of the debate, the Steering Committee re-confirmed the importance of long-term perspective for stronger impact and outreach and expressed their hope that funding opportunities would be found in order to support the next phase of the project.

The project “Strengthening Democratic Citizenship Education in Albania” is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and implemented by the Council of Europe aiming to improve the quality of education in Albania by strengthening democratic citizenship education based on Council of Europe standards and practices.
