Epoka University students discuss “The role, agenda and challenges of the Council of Europe office in Tirana”

Epoka University organised on 2 June an open forum with students and the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Tirana, Jutta Gützkow.

Ms Gützkow presented the Council of Europe values, aims, institutions, its work and achievements. She looked, in particular, at the strategic triangle of standard setting (defining objectives), monitoring (identifying the gaps) and technical cooperation (bridging the gaps). She also explained that the Council of Europe Office in Tirana implements cooperation projects in the fields of ensuring justice, fighting economic crime, combating discrimination, and protecting rights of vulnerable groups (including LGBTI, minorities and Roma), promoting freedom of expression and education for democratic citizenship. She highlighted that most projects were implemented in joint programmes with the European Union.

The discussion focused on the reform of the judiciary, equality and diversity, cybercrime, culture, and students wanted to know in which areas cooperation with the Council of Europe produced results or faced challenges in Albania.

The open forum was an initiative of Dr. Jubjana Vila Zeka, Head of the Centre for European Studies. Ms Gützkow also met with the Rector of Epoka University, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Öztaş, and the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Social Science, Associate Professor Lisen Bashkurti.
