Back COVID-19 outbreak, information in minority languages

COVID-19 outbreak, information in minority languages

The difficult situation caused by the spread COVID-19 outbreak, is even more dramatic for the vulnerable groups and national minorities who face language barriers in coping with the pandemic. As Governments are responsible for providing information necessary for the protection and promotion of rights, including the right to health, access to information in minority languages concerning safety measures and developments related to the risks caused by the spread of COVID-19 is yet a necessity.

To address this, the action on “Promotion of Diversity and Equality in Albania” under the joint European Union/Council of Europe “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey II”, in cooperation with the Institute for Public Health, is supporting 8 national minorities in Albania through the translation in respective minority languages of the booklet “Information on COVID-19 Virus”.

The booklet prepared through the information provided by the Institute of Public Health in Albania, contains important information on COVID-19 safety measures, updates on the rules of the Government for the everyday life and more. The translated booklets can be accessed online and will be also handed to Roma, Serbian, Bulgarian, Bosnian, Vlach, Greek, Macedonian and Montenegrin minorities. This initiative is also supported by the joint European Union and Council of Europe “Romacted” action, the State Committee on Minorities in Albania, the Europe House, the Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination and the Ministry for Health and Social Protection.
