Albanian institutions committed to strengthen the fight against corruption and organised crime

On 10th November, senior representatives of key Albanian beneficiary institutions of the joint European Union and Council of Europe “Action against Economic Crime in Albania” assessed the progress achieved over the last six months focusing on the legal and policy framework and consolidation of their capacities in countering corruption, money laundering and terrorist financing.

They acknowledged the Action’s support towards strengthening the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) legislative and institutional mechanisms on international judicial cooperation in criminal matters, and the improvement of the law “On the notary service in Albania” in compliance with MONEYVAL recommendations.

The Chief inspector for the Declaration and Audit of Assets and Conflicts of Interests emphasized the continuous valuable assistance in paving the way to the effective functioning of the electronic system of assets declarations where 140 representatives of public authorities were provided with technical skills and practical knowledge on how to use the electronic system as 200 others will be trained within November 2021.

In the same line, the representative of the Central Election Committee (CEC) accredited the Action’s support for reviewing the bylaws on the implementation of Electoral Code on election campaign financing and misuse of state resources, including the increase of capacities of 100 representatives from CEC staff, civil society organisations and monitors.

Further on, the participants discussed the future plan of activities and reaffirmed the importance of continuous cooperation towards the prevention and fight against economic crime.

The Action Against Economic Crime in Albania is part of the “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey II”, a joint programme of the European Union and Council of Europe.
