Alliance for Ethical Media in Albania discusses key results and a new approach for handling ‘copyright’ issues in the country

The Alliance for Ethical Media, a voluntary group of Albanian media dedicated to rigorously implementing the Code of Ethics for Journalists, held its annual meeting on November 3rd, 2021. Founded under the secretariat of the Albanian Media Council and supported by the joint European Union and Council of Europe action on Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Media (JUFREX 2), 12 members of the Alliance for Ethical Media met to review their first year’s work and plan future initiatives.

In the course of the past year, the Board of the Alliance received 48 complaints from the public and organisations and issued 44 decisions.

During the meeting the members discussed on the key achievements so far and based on the lessons learnt, they agreed on the future plans and priorities. Members of the Alliance emphasized the need to have a Chair for the Alliance to represent them as a whole, electing Emirjon Senja, journalist of ABCNews.al as the Chair of the Alliance with a one-year mandate.

As copyright remains a concerning issue in Albania, especially in the online media, members of the Alliance discussed important approaches to influence the improvement of the existing copyright legal framework to include new media platforms, like the ones online where infringements to Intellectual Property are most rampant. To discuss further solutions and approaches in this field, a meeting with the Parliamentary Commission on Education and Public Information Mediums was planned.

Alliance for Ethical Media in Albania is an initiative supported by the joint project of European Union and Council of Europe "Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Media in Albania (JUFREX)” part of the larger initiative of the European Union and Council of Europe's Horizontal Facility II.
