The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance   Executive Secretary, Johan Friestedt will talk about the challenges identified in the ECRI annual report 2020

The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) has recently published its annual report 2020, which highlights four major areas related to racism and intolerance:

-             Covid-19 deepened inequalities;

-             LGBTI backlash;

-             Growing religious intolerance;

-             Deep-rooted racism in public life.

To discuss the above mentioned challenges faced by Europe in 2020 the online series “Human Rights Talks: Equality Matters” will host the ECRI Executive Secretary, Johan Friestedt. The online meeting  will be moderated by Ekaterine Skhiladze, Deputy Public Defender of Georgia, and streamed live on the official Facebook page of the Council of Europe office in Georgia on 8 April at 17:00.

Background: The online talks series was initiated together with the Public Defender’s Office  following the outbreak of COVID-19 in Georgia and have covered a wide range of topics including civil activism, access to education, tackling hate speech and disinformation, the role of media in time of crises and discussions with representatives of minority groups and redress mechanisms against discrimination.

The Human Rights Talks: Equality Matters is organised in the framework of the “I Choose Equality” campaign which is implemented as part of the Council of Europe co-operation Project “Fight against Discrimination, Hate Crimes and Hate Speech in Georgia”. The project is implemented under the Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023  with the support of the Danish Neighbourhood Programme in Georgia (DANEP).
