More Specialised Prosecutors to Investigate Hate Crime

The decree of General Prosecutor entering into force from 1 September 2020 authorises only those prosecutors to deal with the crimes committed on intolerance grounds who passed comprehensive training program on investigation and prosecution of hate crimes.

To effectively implement the decree the Council of Europe Office in Georgia continues its support to the introduction of specialisation of prosecutor’s dealing with crimes committed on intolerance grounds by organising series of trainings.

The programme includes following topics: the psychological aspects of discrimination, impact on victims, discriminatory stereotypes, the best practices of investigation on hate crimes, European standards and respective European Court of Human Rights case law.

The latest training was attended by a specialised group of prosecutors from Tbilisi and the regions of Georgia.

In the framework of the co-operation with the General Prosecutor’s Office, more meetings are to be organised.

This activity was conducted in the framework of the  the co-operation Project “Fight against Discrimination, Hate Crimes and Hate Speech in Georgia”. The project is implemented under the Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023 with the support of the Danish Neighbourhood Programme in Georgia (DANEP).
