Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia visits the Council of Europe

A study visit of the representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia took place in Strasbourg on 3-4 March, 2015. The visit was organised in the framework of the project “Strengthening the Independence and Efficiency of the Justice System of Georgia” funded by the voluntary contribution of the Government of Denmark.

During the visit, the prosecutors received information on the current approach and case-law on Articles 2 (Rights to Life), 3 (Prohibition of Torture), 5 (Right to Liberty and Security) and 6 (Right to Fair Trial) of the European Convention on Human Rights (“ECHR”). The participants also had the opportunity to discuss the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights, specifically against Georgia. In this regard, Judge Nona Tsotsoria’s contribution was highly appreciated. The ECHR theme was finally concluded by attending the Grand Chamber hearing: Schaschashwili v. Germany.

The prosecutors also met and discussed respective issues with the representatives of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice, Department of the European Social Charter, Consultative Council of Prosecutors, European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights.

As a follow up step of the study visit, the Prosecutor’s Office has announced to conduct a series of trainings of trainers in order to share the experience and knowledge obtained throughout this study visit.

The study visit was funded through the Ordinary Budget of the Justice and Legal Co-operation Department, Directorate General Human Rights and Rule of Law.
