Council of Europe launches a new Project to Support the Justice System in Georgia

Thanks to a new project to be launched on 7 October 2014 in Tbilisi, the Council of Europe will support the Georgian authorities with the necessary legislative expertise and capacity building by developing and improving the regulatory framework and institutional capacity of the main stakeholders to address the challenges the Georgian criminal justice system and judicial self-governance are facing. The Project, whose title is “Strengthening the Independence and Efficiency of the Justice System in Georgia”, is made possible thanks to a generous contribution by the Kingdom of Denmark through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Over an 18-month period, the Project will work on improving the procedural guarantees for handling criminal cases and enhancing the professionalism of the judiciary by improving judicial training and strengthening judicial self-governance.

The Ministry of Justice, High Council of Justice, High School of Justice, Supreme Court of Georgia, Disciplinary Committee, Chief Prosecutor’s Office, Parliamentary Legal Committee and the State Constitutional Reform Commission of Georgia are among the national partners of the Project.

The launching event is being held at Courtyard by Marriott Tbilisi starting at 10:00 am. The event will be opened by Ms Caterina Bolognese, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, Mr Alexander Baramidze, the First Deputy Minister of Justice, Mr Konstantine Kublashvili, the Chairman of the Supreme Court, as well as Mr Esben Emborg, Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Denmark in Georgia. Other national partners, representatives from international organisations, the diplomatic corps, and international and Georgian NGOs will also be present.
