The project ‘Fight against Discrimination, Hate Crimes and Hate Speech in Georgia’: Work plan approved

The first Steering Committee of the project ‘Fight against Discrimination, Hate Crimes and Hate Speech in Georgia’ was held in Tbilisi, Georgia on 12 September 2018. The Steering Committee approved the work plan for the following six months, and reviewed preliminary findings of a survey on the level of awareness among general public on the anti-discrimination legal frameworks, the attitude towards discrimination in Georgia, as well as a baseline study on the anti-discrimination legislation and policies in Georgia.  Both studies will be published in autumn.

The aim of the Steering Committee is to supervise the implementation of the project, and assess its progress. It also addresses the major risks and challenges that the project might face. The Steering Committee is composed of representatives of the Council of Europe and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, along with the main beneficiary institutions – Parliament of Georgia, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Public Defender’s Office, Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Prosecutor’s Office, High School of Justice, Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, State Ministry for Reconciliation and Civic Equality, and the Administration of the Government of Georgia.

The cooperation project ‘Fight against Discrimination, Hate Crimes and Hate Speech in Georgia’ is implemented under the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2016-2019. It was officially launched in June 2018 and will run till December 2021.
