Council of Europe conducted Training on Policing Hate Crimes against LGBTI Persons

On 27-29 March Council of Europe conducted Training of Trainers on Council of Europe manual “Policing Hate Crimes against LGBTI persons” in Borjomi, Georgia. The activity aimed at raising awareness, increasing sensitisation and conducting capacity building exercises targeted at the police trainers for better protection of LGBTI individuals from violence, hate crime and human rights violations.

The representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs including the Police Academy received information on hate crime and discrimination  psychological effects on victims, victims’ barriers in reporting crimes, secondary victimisation and recent cases and challenges shared by representatives of the Public Defender’s Office and the Human Rights and Monitoring Center.

The training is in line with the objective of the Co-operation Project “Fight against Discrimination, Hate Crimes and Hate Speech in Georgia” implemented under the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2016-2019 assisting the Ministry of Internal Affairs with integrating the manual in its curricula.
