Online conference on “Georgian Language and Linguistic Diversity on the internet”

On 21 February 2022, an online conference on “Georgian Language and Linguistic Diversity on the internet” was organized in cooperation with the Internet Society of Georgia (ISOC) and the Committee of Education and Science of Parliament of Georgia.

The event brought together the representatives of public institutions, Civil Society Organisations, private companies, academia, as well as general public and created platform for exchanging ideas on the instruments to be used for further promotion of Georgian language in the internet space. Herewith, the online conference allowed the organisers to launch a coordination process among the major stakeholders and to discuss on the most pressing issues related to the use of national language on the Internet.  The CoE expert in the field of language technologies and internet made a presentation on “the digital language divide”.

The conference enabled the stakeholders to:

  • Analyse the State language strategy and importance of language technologies
  • Assess the national digital resources and discuss the Intellectual Property rights on the Internet
  • Review the challenges and opportunities of digital learning.

The activity took place in the framework of the project “Strengthening Media Freedom, Internet Governance and Personal Data Protection in Georgia”, which is funded by the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023.
