First Roundtable on Safety of Journalists in Georgia

On 13 December the Council of Europe organised a roundtable on safety of journalists in Georgia. The roundtable gathered a group of key stakeholders in the field, including representatives from the government, civil society, Public Defender’s Office, respective training centres and media organisations.

The aim of the meeting was to introduce Council of Europe standards on safety of journalists to main domestic stakeholders and to assess the needs in the field. The meeting was highly welcomed by all participants. Major challenges, including from the perspective of the law and practice and possible long and short-term actions to counter these challenges were discussed.

The results of the roundtable will be reflected in the Baseline Study on Safety of Journalists, which will be presented to the broader audience in 2020. The Council of Europe will implement a series of activities with respect to safety of journalists.

The roundtable was organised in the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Supporting Freedom of Media and Internet in Georgia”.
