Discussing challenges and promising practices in dealing with cases of violence against women and domestic violence

The Council of Europe organised a roundtable meeting for legal professionals on 29-30 March.  The working meeting brought together specialised prosecutors, judges and representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to discuss gaps and challenges as well as promising practices in dealing with cases of violence against women and domestic violence.

The meeting participants identified possible legislative and practical solutions to problems facing the investigation and prosecution of all forms of violence against women and domestic violence covered by the Council of Europe Istanbul Convention. The main outcomes of the discussion were summarized in the report and will serve as basis for planning follow-up activities, including the refinement of General Prosecutor’s Office   guidelines.

One of the participants of the meeting noted “against the background of rapidly changing legal environment and demands in the area of preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, joint, multi-agency discussions are the most effective way for reaching a common understanding among professionals around various procedural or substantive legal issues concerning effective state response to violence against women”.

The event is a continuation of a series of successful co-operation activities between the Council of Europe and Georgian authorities in the area of preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence.

The meeting was held in the framework of the project ‘’Preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence in Georgia”.
