Sport brings people together. At its best, it contributes to their health and happiness, breaking down barriers and building trust and community spirit. For over five decades, the Council of Europe has advocated fair play and respect in sport, tackling corruption and helping make sport safe, ethical and accessible to all. This work contributes to the creation of inclusive, democratic societies which respect human rights and the rule of law – the Council of Europe’s raison d’être.

CETS 215 will enter into force on 1 September 2019

By depositing its instrument of ratification at the meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Helsinki on 16 May 2019, Switzerland was the 5th country to ratify the Macolin Convention, ensuring its entry into force on 1 September 2019. Italy, which deposited its instrument of ratification on 11 June 2019, is the second EU country to become a State Party to the Convention. This status of Party to the Convention will enable it to participate in the work of the Convention Follow-up Committee to be convened at the beginning of 2020. Three years of effort and mobilisation by a large number of national and international actors have made it possible to take this crucial step in combating corruption in sport. Promoting the importance of the Macolin Convention will continue vigorously in the coming months as part of the Macolin Process in order to generate the maximum number of ratifications, in order to broaden and strengthen the effectiveness of the Convention Follow-up Committee.
