Spain ratifies Convention on Safety, Security and Service in Sport (Saint-Denis Convention)

Ms María José Rienda Contreras, Spanish Secretary of State for Sports and President of the High Council for Sports, formally deposited the instrument of ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on an Integrated Approach to Safety, Security and Service at Football Matches and Other Sports Events (CETS No. 218) at an official ceremony held in Strasbourg in the office of the Secretary General, Mr Thorbjørn Jagland, in the presence of Ms Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General, on Friday 6 September 2019.

At the same time, Spain denounced the European Convention on Spectator Violence (ETS No. 120).

The Convention will enter into force for Spain on 1 November 2019.

As Spain is the tenth State Party to ratify this new Convention, it allows the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, in accordance with Article 13.5 of the Convention, to invite the Committee on Safety and Security at Sport Events to hold its first meeting in the coming year.

This Convention came into force on 1 November 2017. For more information on the status of signatures and ratifications, please consult the Treaty Office website.
