Most of the rights enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights may, in one way or another, be at stake in the context of sport. The human rights issues facing sport may concern, for instance, racism and discrimination, economic and social rights, child protection and media freedom.
These rights are enacted in international standards. The protection of most of these rights is ensured by Council of Europe monitoring mechanisms which rely on activities such as country visits, individual remedies, collective complaints, country reports, collection of data, hearings, etc.
Bodies such as the European Committee of Social Rights and the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) are just two of the bodies that have specialist know-how in areas that could be of benefit to sport. For example, the work of the European Committee on Social Rights may provide support and guidance to the sport sector when it comes to the protection of the right to health, the right to social life and social dialogue. It may also be interesting for sport sector to share its own experience with the human rights monitoring bodies, to see whether the issues it faces were already addressed in other contexts.
EPAS is therefore organising a Forum on Sport and Human Rights on 1 June 2021, whose aim is to create an exchange between the human rights monitoring bodies and the world of sport.
