European Sport Charter: consultative visit to Iceland

Iceland hosted its first Consultative Visit on compliance with the European Sport Charter on 11-13 November 2018. A team of sports policy experts met with the main stakeholders of the Icelandic sports movement, including representatives from the Ministry of Culture and Education, the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland, the Reykjavik Sports Union, the Institute for Research and Analysis, the University of Iceland and the Icelandic Youth Association.

During the consultative visit, particular attention was paid to avoiding drop-outs in sport (people leaving sport organisations as well as people discontinuing sports activities). Furthermore, the promotion of sport for all, with a particular focus on sport for youth and for the elderly, was among the discussed topics. The full programme of the visit included a meeting with Minister of Education, Science and Culture, Lilja Alfreðsdóttir. A report on Iceland’s compliance with commitments, including the respective recommendations, will be made available to Iceland’s authorities, following the visit.
