PACE: Sweden’s Justice and Migration Minister and Mayor of Athens take part in the Migration Day debate

On 28 June 2017, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) devoted a full day of its summer plenary part-session to migration, with the adoption of four resolutions and two recommendations on comprehensive solutions to the refugee crisis (rapporteur: Duarte Marques, EPP/CD; see also his information report on the situation in Hungary), transit migration in the Mediterranean (rapporteur: Militiadis Varvitsiotis, EEP/CD), the value of migrants for society (rapporteur: Andrea Rigoni, ALDE) and integration in times of critical pressure (rapporteur: Susanna Huovinen, SOC). The Council of Europe Secretary General and the Commissioner for Human Rights took part in the debate, together with two guest speakers: the Justice and Migration Minister of Sweden, Morgan Johansson, and the Mayor of Athens, Georgios Kaminis.

The Migration Committee held a hearing with a former detained child refugee during the day; side events were also organised: a Living Library; and a virtual tour of the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan produced by the UN using 360° virtual-reality technology.
