Fact-finding mission to prepare reports on pushbacks and safe third countries

On 21 and 22 February 2022, Mr Pierre-Alain Fridez (Switzerland, SOC), the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) rapporteur on pushbacks on land and sea: illegal measures of migration management, together with Ms Stephanie Krisper (Austria, ALDE), PACE rapporteur on safe third countries for asylum seekers, visited the border area between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They held meetings in Zagreb with representatives of the Ministry of Interior and of the Ministry of Foreign and International Affairs, members of the PACE Delegation of the Croatian Parliament, the Ombudsperson and NGO representatives. Meetings were also held with representatives of UNHCR, the Danish Refugee Council and Border Violence Monitoring Network. The rapporteurs visited the Reception Centre for Asylum Seekers in Zagreb, the border police station in Cetingrad, the Velika Kladuša Border Police Unit and the Reception Centre for Asylum Seekers in Lipa. The report on safe third countries is expected to be adopted at the June 2022 part-session of the Parliamentary Assembly and the report on pushbacks in October 2022.
