Training on integration of migrants in Athens and exchange of views with the United Nations

On 15 February 2018, the Special Representative of the Secretary General on Migration and Refugees (SRSG) will participate in an exchange of views between the Council of Europe and the United Nations with experts from capitals, including Renate Winter, Chair of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. A thematic discussion is organised on the protection of migrant children which is a priority for both the Council of Europe and the United Nations.

On 8-9 February 2018, in Athens, around 35 local authority officials, such as social workers and interpreters, participated in training focusing on promoting integration and community cohesion. The training reflected on the experience in the UK and transferable ideas, such as protecting migrants and refugees from harm and exploitation, with understanding of the specific risks and needs they have. The city officials reflected on shared and different experiences in an open and interactive atmosphere. The training was organised by the Office of the SRSG and the municipality of Athens and delivered by Migration Yorkshire.

On 2-3 February 2018, in Athens, school teachers, kindergarten teachers, psychologists, social workers and representatives of NGOs working in schools with refugees, participated in training on the non-discrimination, tolerance and integration of refugee and migrant children in mainstream education. The event confirmed that the integration of refugee and migrant children is one of the most recent challenges in mainstream schooling. The participants emphasized how important it is for them to have a discussion from a practical perspective with real-life scenarios. They exchanged personal work experiences, success stories and expressed their interest in keeping contact after the event in order to continue sharing information when confronting similar challenges in the future. The training was co-organised by the Office of the SRSG, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) and the municipality of Athens. Both training programmes were organised in the context of the follow-up of recommendations made in the SRSG’s report on Greece, following a fact-finding mission there in 2016.
