The Council of Europe will organize on the 5th of July a conference on Homosexuality and Contemporary Christianity Interdisciplinary and Multi confessional Approaches-
The aim of this conference is to study to the interaction between homosexual identity and contemporary Christianity, namely socio-theological approaches of Churches on issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Taking into account the internal diversity of Christian Churches, but also the socio-political environment of LGBTI community in Eastern Europe countries where the Orthodox Christianity is dominant, a particular attention will be paid to Orthodox theology. Moreover, the topic of same-sex marriage will be addressed with an ecumenical approach of different Christian traditions. The contribution of Churches in promoting tolerance and non-discrimination towards LGBTI will be also highlighted. This first institutional and scientific initiative of the Council of Europe intend to pave the way for further work on interfaith dialogue and SOGI.
The conference is organised by the Council of Europe (SOGI unit), together with the Faculty of Orthodox Theology, University of Thessaloniki and the Groupe Sociétés, Religions, Laïcités (CNRS-GSRL) of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes PSL (Paris-Sorbonne).
