Improved international co-operation is a vital component of anti-trafficking action

Today, the European Union and Council of Europe action to combat human trafficking organised a multi-disciplinary workshop to improve transnational co-operation.

The workshop gathered representatives of national public authorities, including police, diplomatic and consular staff and social workers, as well as actors of civil society and international organisations. Four international guest speakers from countries of origin of foreign victims and countries of destination of Macedonian victims, namely Albania, Bulgaria, Italy and Serbia, informed the participants about concrete cases and good practices with the aim of facilitating the development of contacts and partnerships between countries.

In her welcoming remarks, Monica Martinez, Head of Operations at the Council of Europe Programme Office in Skopje, stressed that “international co-operation is a vital component of anti-trafficking action. Countries of origin, transit and destination need to work together and exchange information in order to facilitate a safe and voluntary return and an effective reintegration of victims of human trafficking”.

The event is organised as part of the “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey”, a co-operation initiative co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe, which aims at assisting beneficiaries in South-East Europe to comply with the Council of Europe standards and European Union acquis in the framework of the enlargement process.
