Ambassadors, dear friends,

It is a pleasure to mark this year’s Fiesta Nacional de España with you today.

Spain’s history is extraordinary, complex and fascinating and there is much to reflect on every 12th of October.

But today I want to pay tribute to the country’s positive, outward-looking and internationalist approach:

An approach reflected in the inspiring words of Spain’s former Prime Minister, Felipe Gonzalez, when he spoke at our recent 70th anniversary ceremony, and in the fact that Spain has now ratified a total of 135 of our treaties.

As we move forward, the Council of Europe will address new and evolving challenges:

For example, our work to address human trafficking for the purpose of labour exploitation, and our efforts to ensure that Artificial Intelligence upholds our common standards, rather than undermines them.

Ces tâches sont lourdes et d’autres s’y ajouteront sans aucun doute.

Nous devons, si nous voulons les mener à bien, coopérer.

Et je suis certaine que nous pouvons compter sur l’Espagne qui continuera de jouer le rôle positif dont nous tirons tous des bienfaits.

Mesdames et Messieurs, mon propos est le suivant :

En 2019, l’Espagne a tout à fait le droit de célébrer non seulement son histoire, mais aussi ce qu’elle est devenue.

Moderne et optimiste, l’Espagne a un rôle important en ce qu’il façonne l’avenir de l’Europe et je me réjouis de notre coopération dans les mois et les années à venir.
