A new Council of Europe-European Union joint programme to foster democracy in Europe’s southern neighbourhood – with the full cooperation of partner countries in the region – will be launched on 10 April 2015 by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe and Jari Vilén, Ambassador, Head of the EU delegation to the Council of Europe.

High-level government representatives from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia and the Palestinian National Authority, will meet Council of Europe officials and experts in Strasbourg for a series of workshops that day.

Underpinned by the EU Neighbourhood policy and the Council of Europe Policy towards neighbouring regions, the 3-year South Programme II, will continue to develop a long-term partnership with countries in the region as concerns issues of human rights, rule of law and democracy. The programme is implemented by the Council of Europe and funded by the European Union.
