Decision of the Committee of Ministers at the initiative of the French Presidency: support for the Christchurch Call

On Wednesday 10 July, at the meeting of the Committee of Ministers, at the initiative of the French Chairmanship, the member states expressed their support for the Christchurch Call to Action to Eliminate Terrorist and Violent Extremist Content Online, while referring to the standards relating to freedom of expression contained in the European Convention for Human Rights and in the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.

This support is consistent with the approach followed by the Committee of Ministers which, in March 2018, adopted Recommandation CM/Rec(2018)2 to member states on the roles and responsibilities of internet intermediaries.

The Christchurch Call is the result of a joint initiative by Emmanuel Macron, President of France and Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, aimed at acting against and pre-empting threats on the internet.
