International Anti-Corruption Day, 9 December

To mark the International Anti-Corruption Day, the president of the Group of States against Corruption of the Council of Europe (GRECO), Marin Mrčela, today made the following statement:

“Combating corruption is not only a matter of new laws, but also a matter of ethics and individual behaviour, and often implies changing people’s hearts and minds.

Corruption damages the economy, negatively affecting potential growth and job creation, in both the public and private sectors. It undermines trust in democratic institutions and threatens human rights and the rule of law.

Corruption makes our societies less equal and less fair.

When corruption practices are considered acceptable or go unpunished, the borders between what is good and bad, between what is ethical and non-ethical, even criminal, become blurry. Our faith in democratic values, in the importance of integrity, is weakened.

We need to raise every individual´s awareness of the multiple devastating effects of corruption and show why we must reject it, why it doesn´t have a place in our societies.”

GRECO has launched this video to contribute to raising awareness about the damage corruption causes and the need to combat it resolutely.
