Speaking at the closure of the World Forum for Democracy, France’s Minister of State for European Affairs, Harlem Désir, applauded the young people fighting for democracy in Burkina Faso, Turkey, Ukraine, Tunisia, Iran and Syria, without whom there would be no democracy.  He also paid homage to the young people throughout Europe who fight against uncertain living conditions and mass unemployment and to keep alive the hope of equality and dignity for all through democracy.

“Bringing Europe closer to its citizens and reconciling the peoples of Europe with democracy is a task that we share.  We must ensure that each new generation takes over the fight”, he said.

“Creating a future for young people also means fighting for the planet’s future”, added the Minister, pointing out that Paris was to host the world climate conference in 2015.  “Saving the planet means saving young people”, he concluded.
